For most trips to Japan, a data-only SIM card is sufficient. If you need your own personal number, with the ability to receive SMS for registration in Japanese services and participating in lotteries, consider a few of the options described below.

Non-prepaid SIM cards (even eSIMs) usually require identification, so your passport will be checked when you receive the order, or you’ll be asked to upload a scan. As a bonus, if the SIM is already installed in your phone, a click sound will likely play when you take a photo or video.

You can choose to pick up the item at the airport in Japan, and after ID verification, you’ll receive an activation code. Alternatively, you can order delivery to supported countries and upload your ID online.

Full-featured Docomo number with calling, sending and receiving SMS, no expiration date — as long as there are funds on the balance.

  • 5GB plan - ¥3,190/month, 1GB plan - ¥1,690/month. There’s also a ¥1,490/month plan with no data included.
  • Sleeping tariff ¥900/Month, just for number reservation.
  • ¥990 roaming service — you can receive calls and messages outside Japan.

Hanacell

Less friendly option, but it works too - $69 starter kit. Site is only in Japanese , Sim/esim.

  • Provides a Softbank number, calls, sending/receiving SMS.
  • No roaming.
  • There is an option to save the number for the next trip for $12/year starting from the second year.

Prepaid

Even eSIM isn’t sent via email; a printed QR code will be mailed instead.

Rakuten Sim\Esim

  • Fixed one-time fee, no calls, no outgoing SMS — only incoming. Internet included for a month.
  • Validity period: 13 months. If an extension is needed, please confirm the possibility 2–3 months before the end.

Docomo Sim\Esim

  • Validity period from 2 to 12 months.
