Historically, the island was the center of silkworm production, and cats were kept to protect cocoons from rats. Locals and fishermen often fed the semi-wild cats, giving them a portion of their daily catch. From the very beginning, there was one critical rule on the island: no dogs allowed.
How to get there
From Sendai to Ishinomaki by train (1h) or bus (1h 20m). Ferry from the Chuou port in Ishinomaki. In strong winds it may be cancelled – check on the official site . It’s better to take the early 9:00 departure; the next one is at 12:00 and that’s already inconvenient. The crossing takes about 40 minutes – either the main Nito port or the smaller Odomari port.
